Art in flowers daycamp

Three beautiful days of juxtaposing creativity, sunlight, art, and outdoor fun.

August 8-10, 2023

Join us in harvesting flowers, frolicking in fields, and expressing artistic sense as we complete three flower-themed art projects.

We will look into the artistic lives of three greats - Seurat, Van Gogh, and Pollock, internalizing samples of their work before embarking on our own artistic journeys.  Each day, we will create our own masterpieces, inspired by the artist of the day, using flowers and other living ingredients.

Breathe in the beauty of nature, and create living art.

  • After learning a bit about George Seurat’s life and pointillism, it will be time for us to embark on our own artistic endeavor. Gathering ingredients in the color, form, and size that our eye is drawn to, we will harvest flowers and other living ingredients from the fields at Heart and Soil Ridge. As we gather, we will discover harvesting techniques, and post-harvest care for our flowers - and gain inspiration for our afternoon project time as we work with our flowers.

During the afternoon, the creativity begins…each person will have the opportunity to create their own living masterpiece of fresh flowers, arranged in pointillism style, and can choose from a ready-made template to work with, or have the choice to draw their own.

  • Van Gogh left a wake of art behind him, with many well-known pieces still greatly admired today. We will look into several of his masterpieces - sunflowers, starry nights, and his self-portraits, before embarking on our own self-discovery journey as we make a self-portrait in flowers. Not only will we use flowers from our flower beds, but we will also forage for discovery - tuning our eye onto the plants, grasses, and flowers that emerge in our cover cropped fields. With all these living things gathered, we will arrange flowers, seeds, grains, and any other living plant discovered to display our own version of “me”.

  • Today we take the deep dive into abstract expressionism - studying the methods and art of Jackson Pollock. We will re-imagine some of the concepts of his drip-painting method using dried flowers, to produce a wall canvas of flowers to bring home. Enjoy capturing this moment in time, as we toss, shake, flutter, and drop flowers into their final resting place for this work of art.
